PRACTICAL TAB MANAGEMENT

How Tabosmart’s local AI helps organize Chrome tabs

By Saulius Petreikis, maker of Tabosmart · Updated 8 September 2026

On supported Chrome devices, Tabosmart uses optional on-device AI to suggest additional tab relationships, group names and equivalent explanation wording. Model input stays on the device. Core tab suggestions work without AI, and you approve every action.

Useful before the model is ready

Tabosmart first creates suggestions and explanations using local rules. It uses open-tab titles and URLs, activity, opening context, confirmed grouping choices and available browsing-history aggregates. AI can then add inferred relationships or better names. It never needs to be ready for the initial suggestions to appear.

What the model receives

Naming and discovery use bounded current-tab titles, domains and selected local context. They do not send page bodies, form values, complete URL paths or queries, browser-history titles or full visit lists to the model. AI proposals have constraints and still require review. A plausible name is not proof that a group is right.

On-device processing has a specific meaning

Chrome’s Prompt API runs its model locally. Tabosmart has no cloud inference fallback and does not upload browsing records to the developer. Chrome may need to download and prepare its model first; normal browser updates and model downloads still involve network activity. A feedback post is separate and contains only what you choose to share.

Why availability varies

The extension works in desktop Chrome from version 120; Chrome documents Prompt API availability for extensions from version 138, subject to device, model and language requirements. The interface shows checking, downloading, preparing, ready or unavailable states. An enabled preference is not proof that the model is ready. Read Chrome’s current requirements for your device.

You stay in control

Optional AI is enabled by default for fresh workspaces, but model setup starts from an explicit user action when a download is required. Existing off choices stay off. You can switch assistance off in Settings & privacy. AI cannot approve grouping, saving or closing actions. An unavailable model or failed request leaves core suggestions usable.

Useful feedback about AI

Tell us the proposed relationship, why it missed your intention and whether the issue was setup, naming or grouping. Remove private page titles and URLs before posting. The most useful report explains the task you were trying to keep together.
